Once 卒中 strikes, 90% of survivors with 偏瘫 will have 上 肢体 功能障碍 and lose self-care ability. Most 患者 know that early 康复 治疗 can 恢复 the 运动 功能 of 肢体 as soon as possible; however, it is not clear to 患者 what process will they go through and what exercise is effective in each stage. So, to better understand the 康复 process, let's start with the well-known Brunnstrom stages of 卒中 恢复.
Developed by Swedish physical therapist Signe Brunnstrom in the 1960s, Brunnstrom stages demonstrate how the 运动 功能 is restored and the brain reorganized after 卒中. Most physical therapists and 康复 professionals use Brunnstrom approach as a theoretical basis for 治疗 and a method to evaluate a 患者's 恢复. It follows six stages of sequential 运动 恢复 after 卒中.

Stage 1: Flaccidity
There is a period of flaccidity immediately following a 卒中. During this stage, the 患者 is completely unable to 移动 spontaneously due to nerve damage. The intervention is needed to prevent unused muscles from atrophying.
What training can do in this stage
Passive trainingthat moves 患者's affected 手 and 手臂 with the help of therapists is an 重要的 exercise in this stage. Through passive training, the signals of movement are sent to the brain from muscles and skin, activating the 运动 nerves of the brain.

Stage 2: 痉挛 appears
恢复 begins with developing 痉挛. Muscles may begin to tighten reflexively and have difficulty relaxing. It is still difficult for the 患者 to do the voluntary movement.
What training can do in this stage
Even though it is more difficult to 移动 because of 痉挛, passive training is still crucial for 患者 in this stage. To avoid muscle stiffness affecting future activities, it is necessary to 移动 the 关节 through slow passive training.
Stage 3: Increased 痉挛
In the third stage, the 痉挛 reaches its peak. 患者 experience more discomfort and 疼痛. At the 相同的 time, muscle synergies and weak voluntary movements begin to appear. If 患者 can use their synergies, they can complete some simple activities.
What training can do in this stage
In addition to continuing passive training, active training can also be included appropriately. 患者 can try to do some daily activities with the assistance of therapists and 医疗的 设备. The more signals sent from 患者's brain, the stronger 患者's muscles become. However, it is 重要的 to note that highly stressful activities should be avoided at this stage because of the increase in 痉挛.

Stage 4: Decreased 痉挛
The 痉挛 begins to decline. The 患者's brain is becoming more and more adept at controlling muscles and using muscle coordination.
What training can do in this stage
During this stage, 患者 should focus on training the brain to control muscles. Since 患者 can act normal and control movements on a limited basis, 患者 can do different training to stimulate different areas of the brain. And, repeat these exercises to accelerate central nervous reshaping.
Stage 5: Complex movement combination
痉挛 continues to decrease, and there is a greater ability for 患者 to 移动 freely from the synergy pattern. The 患者 is able to perform more complex movements.
What training can do in this stage
From passive training to active training, it is the time to strengthen muscles. Add small weights to your exercises to build muscle endurance.

Stage 6: 痉挛 Disappears and coordination reappears
When you are in this stage, it means that your 运动 control is almost recovered and the 痉挛 completely disappears. You can practice coordination for more difficult activities.
What training can do in this stage
Keep strengthening 患者' muscles with resistance training and add more complex exercises such as playing games, shuffling cards, etc. to improve coordination.
This six-stage 恢复 process from Signe Brunnstrom is a popular guide for both the therapist and 患者. It is effective in 临床的 settings and can significantly enhance voluntary muscle movement after 卒中. Based on the Brunnstrom stages, 司羿 手部康复 system for the clinic is innovated to help 患者 to relearn and recover 手 运动 functions via a series of passive and active exercises. It has 6 training modes covering 所有的 stages of 手部康复.

During Brunnstrom stages 1 and 2, therapists can use passive training mode to help 卒中 患者 do flexion and extension exercises to prevent muscle 萎缩. In the third stage, the assistance training mode can capture the 患者's weak active movement and assist the 患者 in completing the active movement. For critical stages 4 and 5, we specially incorporated innovative mirror training and task-oriented training to further enhance 患者' learning process and re-educate 患者 to use 手 during the activities of 日常生活. To improve 手 coordination and strength, the 司羿 手部康复 system also provides 患者 with resistance training and active game training in the final stage.

司羿 手部康复 system has already been applied in thousands of hospitals, and its 临床的 effect is recognized by lots of institutions. It is a good helper for therapists, greatly improving the efficiency of 治疗. Contact us now to learn more about it: info@司羿.com
